This is a song that just appeared completely intact in a matter of minutes, but took a year or so to really finish. Maybe that's true of a lot of songs, but this one had a number of what seemed to me compelling independent ideas that took time to--well, for lack of a less self-conscious sounding word--connect.

It is a song about second and third (and fourth and fifth) chances; it is a song about appreciating the subtle ways the people around us don't let us down; it's about gathering the past, present and future together and moving forward; and, more globally, it is about community on this planet. I think it was originally inspired by my interest in Whitman, interconnectedness, continuity, etc (see The River Between in the listening room).

It is a simple song, but it was not as easy as it sounds.

It gets so I'm so tired
It gets so I'm so lonely
You forget sometimes that I'm
I'm convinced that I'm the only one
And suddenly it's undone

September left its mark
'times you don't know what you are
But somehow in this darkness
The witness to a billion stars

It's subtle but I won't let you down
This time around
This time around
It's somethin' that I think you will find
This time around
This time around

And I guess you're right
But I just can't get these things to combine
It's like I'm frozen in time
Inside

And you say it's your life
But I know it's not just your life
We are all connected
We are all connected

It's subtle but I won't let you down
This time around
This time around
It's somethin' that I think you will find
This time around
This time around
